CAPITOL PUNISHMENT
Years Published Nov 1980 - Jan 1984
Capitol Punishment was a zine put out by Bill Jones, who was in D.K.ed Willies, Pogrom, and Baby Hotline and his brother Jim, who was in Pogrom and Ex-Machina. Their zine documented the Lincoln music scene of the early 1980s. At first it was just the print zine with band info, photos, lyrics, drawings etc, but they began including along with the zine, a casette of Lincoln bands. Their tapes gave exposure to bands like The Click, Rapid Vapid, Hymn To Joy, Twisted Justice, Pogrom, Cartoon Pupils, Holiday, and many other bands of the day. Many of the bands that had songs on a Capitol Punishment comp were recorded by Bill or Matthew Sweet

From Michael Farrar: The proper name for the group was: 2000 Years of Catholic Guilt. Julian came up with the name.
Julian was simply called 'Julian Vermaas' at the time - the 'Winston-Terrence' part wasn't in use at the time. Other than the basement of the house where Bill was living, we didn't play any gigs - anyplace. Although we didn't play anyplace (I wouldn't count the party's at Bill's place since they tended to spontaneous erupt while we were there to practice) I did design several posters advertising the band (just catchy/semi-offensive graphics and the band name - no other details) that Julian and I plastered all over the downtown area for a couple of weeks. This is probably the only reason a band that never played anyplace managed an entry to a list of Lincoln bands. Fynbu and Farrar had previously been working together in yet another band that didn't play anyplace outside of the drummer's basement. Depending upon which one of the members you asked it had a different name - but considering that we didn't ever play anyplace it really didn't matter what we were called. Fynbu and Farrar left to form Fish Box and then later Morphine Angel.

E-mail received from Dan Eikleberry: I was in the Chandelles, 1962-1964. Band split to form The Coachmen, for the most part. I departed Lincoln for the USAF Academy 1964-1968, so I missed the Coachmen experience. I continued with studio guitar work at Columbia Studios, Hollywood, and fill-in guitar player for many name singers and bands in the 1960's. I'm a Boeing 747 Captain today,
for United Airlines, based in Los Angeles. I live in Las Vegas, NV. I keep in touch with Bruce Watson. Bruce is President of a banking company in Concord, CA. We think Jim Reinmuth is in Palm Springs, CA. Jim Schaffer is probably still in Lincoln.

From Nick Westra: We were a mountain dew band with sing-songy tunes in the spirit of Camper van Beethoven, although we were trying to be like Nirvana. hits included "Hold My Penis" and "Pantyhose". Live performances were limited to famous garage shows, freedom rock festivals, and the purple moon cafe. Our self produced/self titled CASSETTE was released in like 1995. yeah, 1995. We were 16. Our 15 minutes of fame was when we played freedom rock with Plastik Trumpet and Cherry Crush. It was at this show when Jonathan Hischke misquoted our band name as Christmas Potato Funk. Jonathan Hischke was a god to us. Still is, for that matter.

From the Nebraska Hall of Fame: The Coachmen, one of the most popular and successful
rock bands in the Midwest, reunited with original
members, Rick Bell, Jeff Travis, Craig Perkins,
"Red" Freeman and Bruce Watson, at the August 23,
1997 show at the Pla-Mor Ballroom in Lincoln.
Originally from Lincoln, the Coachmen were formed in
1964 and performed regionally at teen dances
like 9-high, Keen Time, and Woods Park Pool
Parties.
In January 1965, The Coachmen won the KOIL radio
Battle of the Bands in Omaha. Shortly thereafter
they recorded and released "Mr. Moon", written by
Freeman, first on the local MMC record label,
later on Bear Records out of Minneapolis. The song
was a smash hit...reaching #1 on the local charts in
the fall of 1965, as well as going to #1 in regional
markets like San Francisco and Sacremento California,
Salem Oregon, and Minneapolis.

From Kevin Gregorius: True ‘dat. That song kicked ass. First “punk” band, alt-rock band, what-have-you that I saw to
incorporate a cello. I think the Demagogues gave at least some inspiration for Hour Slave’s use of a violin. I’ve definitely got a nutty picture of me and Peter at one of Jenn Graham’s Haloween parties.

I played a fucking out of tune balalaika ran through all kinds of effects pedals. There are recordings of this that were distributed. Our cover of "Wake Me Up Before You Go Go" as done by Bob Dylan was pretty cool.

From Charles Lieurance: the Dismember was a Hastings band I started with a friend of mine, Jim
Story. We ran Rabbit Records (a punk/indie store) together. We ran it...into the fucking ground. We were sort of a cross between X, Flipper and Gang of Four (we covered "He'd Send in the Army". It was me on guitar & vocals, Jim on bass, guitar and vocals, his girlfriend (who worked at Dirt Cheap when we moved the band to Lincoln), whose name I can't remember on keyboards & vocals, and this really cool guy who drove a white Cadillac convertible on drums. Can't for the life of me remember his name either, although I'm pretty sure his last name was Howard. For awhile Doug Marx (great artist and old flame of Diane Cornelius and Sara Kovanda) joined us and we mostly got drunk and got into real physical violence with frat boys at Hastings College. We played some hardcore fests in the midwest with bands like The Sacred Cows (which became Island of Misfit Toys, sorta). Our only Lincoln show was at Larry Boehmer's (Zoo Bar's founder) short-lived rock venue, Larry's Showcase. We're on a compilation of Nebraska hardcore bands somewhere, doing a song called "Let's Put Ronnie on a Coin" and someone told me that we were on a California hardcore comp (this Howard guy moved to LA and started a few hardcore bands, one of which was on the great Live from the Eastern Front record, and he gave a live tape of us to some art damaged hardcore bands in Cali), doing a song called "I Shit Gold."
We were around on & off (Story was a very serious Sociology major and finally moved away to teach in VERY dangerous inner city schools) from 1982-84. Story was hospitalized after a beating he received from some frat
boys at one of our basement shows. He was a big fucker too, for a Sociology student that is. The creeps broke two of my ribs the same night but I just laid around and moaned in my apartment in Hastings until they sort of
healed. My girlfriend at the time, Lisa Norwood, kept insisting on sucking my dick because we were so cool getting beat up by frat boys for our punk ideals & even though it caused my ribs immeasurable pain, I let her do it repeatedly. After that, I got into as many fights as possible just to keep those blow jobs coming (as it were...)

Apparently this was the headline of a Weekly World News article that spawned something more akin to a gang than a movement, which seemed to be an ever-present artifact of the music scene for sometime ultimately giving birth to DJ Corky 9.

Dan Jenkins list of essential Lincoln releases:
These are in not in any order other than roughly chronological.
13 Nightmares - "Shitride" - This one is such a classic that I snagged 3
more copies when Ron found a stash of records in his basement.
Mercy Rule - "God Protects Fools" - If this only contained the songs "My
Mouth", "I Am I Said" and "Summer" it would probably still be better than
everything else.
Sideshow - "Eggplants and Sunspots" - I think I listen to this more often
than any other local release. It hits me right............there.
Mercy Rule - Bye Bye/Royal 7" - Heide and Jon duet like a motherfucker on
"Royal" and then Jon plays a guitar breakdown/solo that should be studied in
rock school.
Sideshow - Rust/Face Foot Ladder 7" - a different version of "Rust" later
appeared on "Lip Read Confusion", but the drumming on "Face Foot Ladder" is
worth the price of admission alone. Pawl in all his barefoot glory.
Pawl=Rawk.
Linoma compilation / Novelty Yellow compilation - Granted, both of these
compilations contain some grade-A crap mixed in with the good/great songs,
but both are interesting snap shots of Lincoln music. Highlights: Novelty
Yellow - St. Nicklehead, Polecat. Linoma: Mousetrap, Rosebud, plus the
usual suspects.
Sideshow - "Lip Read Confusion" - Sometimes I'll be driving in my car and
I'll start singing "Where did all you shattered people, where'd you come
from?". The only bad thing about this album is that it was the last from
Sideshow.
Polecat - Saddle Creek/Chinese Water Torture 7" - Back when "Saddle Creek"
was just a road and a Polecat song. But buy this one for the b-side.
Red Max - Voodoo Liquor Hotrot 7" - Hey, all you sleazy, garage rock,
greaser punks: Find a copy of this, NOW!! It will melt your face.
Opium Taylor - "Fade Machine, Fade Magazine" - Heine, Focht, Silcock and
Noecker live up to their potential.......you knew they would.
Wide - "Gay" - This is just awesome. Probably the most unique CD to ever
surface in Lincoln. And it's produced like a champ. Oh, and Thurston Moore
liked it.....
Booby prize: Mousetrap - "Lover" - Yeah, so this is out of Omaha, but you
should still own it. Trust me, you'll love it.
p.s. - Most of these records/CDs are still available. If you don't know where,
I'll gladly point you in the right direction.
Dan is currently in Ideal Cleaners and was also in Sailor Ripley and Teacozy.

DUFF' STUFF & SON OF DUFF' STUFF
Years Playing: Published ?
The Duffy's monthly schedule you see sitting on the counter when you walk in the door is called Son of Duff' Stuff. That probably doesn't make a lot of sense to people who don't know what Duff' Stuff was. Duffy's monthly calendar started out as a 4 page full-size newspaper that came out each month, which featured full length articles about some of the bands who'd be playing that month, Interviews with local bands, reviews of CD's by local and non-local bands, cartoons, and the Duff' Stuff Tattoo O-De-Month, a photo of some local rockers tattoo.
