From Charles Lieurance: Oh shit, I forgot the coolest band of all I was in. Me, Kristen, Vince (John Berrigan of Sam the Butcher -- with Brian Zikmund & Tisdale) & Shawn Harding. We played Duffy's three times with the rave dancey group A-1 House of Fun as A-10 House of Zen. We all sat on the stage tied together and covered with Christmas lights, banged on tribal drums and blew through all manner of gourd horns and trumpets while Kristen recited the voice over at the beginning of 101 Dalmations. At the end, we sang a beautiful version of "Up On the Housetop....Down through the chimney with lots of toys/all for the good little girls and boys..." Kristen and I looked at each other right then and immediately used "Yes, Jesus loves me..." as the chorus. The audience honestly went wild. It fit perfectly and we never discussed doing it prior to, um, actually doing it. Kristen and I had great psychic energy even back then.

APATHETIC INJECTION

Started in the spring of 1983, AI was a zine put out By Daniel Kelley of (D.K.ed Willies), Liz Lang and Steve Schleich (from Rapid Vapid) and others. While it did cover a lot of Lincoln bands, it was more of a regional punk zine which included interviews and articles about bands like Minor Threat, P.I.L., Black Flag, The Minutemen. It also included photos, and comics. Issue one includes a great interview with Lincoln's Baby Hotline. Based on the few issues I've seen, future issues seemed to get away from music and became more of a skate punk zine.

From Tery Daly: During our time together in Suzy Dreamer, Jeff kept talking about this other band he jammed with in his garage called Thieving Winona. When pressed for details about the band, all he'd offer is that "we're not very good". He told us that for months. After I and many others goaded him for months to sett up a show they finally did. SO help me, they were one fo the best punk bands I've ever seen, and I'm old enough to have seen some of the "real" punk bands in the late 70's! Jeff was like a different person out from behind the drum kit! They released their CD under the name Thieving Winona, but during that first live show, unbeknownst to the rest of the band, Jeff Gustafson announced to the crowd that the band was changing their name from Thieving Winona to Bear Eats Fish. Around for only a very brief time, this band made quite a stir on the scene with their very stripped down punk sound, driven by the fact that each member of this band was very new to their instrument. Jeff was known for making up many of the bands lyrics on stage during the show, so the songs would all be slighly different each time they played. They broke up and reformed several times, and in 2006, after a small lineup change, changed their name to Awesome Dirtbike. From Eric Hallstrom and Kevin Gregorius: Beer Gut: The band that wasn’t. Sometime in 1992-1993 several trouble makers came up with the idea of having an air band. The band would play only air instruments. This probably wasn’t the most original concept, except that they took to promoting their band through graffiti absolutely everywhere. The band was called Beer Gut and you couldn’t go much of anywhere in Downtown Lincoln or the UNL campus without encountering the face of beer gut. It inspired editorials in the Daily Nebraskan. I have at least one of these saved somewhere, I think. They eventually made the nightly news because of their relentlessness. Not sure if anyone was ever arrested. After some time, the original “members” of Beer Gut were joined by imitators who were also tagging Beer Gut.

1. 13 Nightmares "Shit Ride"
Although I may be in the minority, I think Cosgrove's *Soul on Ice* schtick just adds to the charm of this record. And, of course, it rocks like all hell. The riff for the title song is monumental, in every sense of the word, and "Field of Glass" is one of the most beautiful songs ever written, period. It breaks your heart AND makes you want to piss on the flag all at once. Anger, not as an energy, but as an exhausting enema. I am thankful, however, that great live recordings do exist of "FOG" in its more cranked-up pre-"Shit Ride" state. The 13 Nightmares debut cassette, "Hurts to Be Murdered" is worth it for "September" alone. Also, their cover of Bread's "Everything I Own" on Pravda's K-Tel Smash Hits record is great.

2. GC3 - Both unreleased recordings
Clarke County -- Murder Ballads (recorded live at Duffy's) -- "If You're Goin' Down" (with Nancy)" and "The Double Shift." & the aborted, bungled studio recording Cosgrove still firing on all cylinders with help from great musicians like Colby Starck, Steve Streit, LeAnn Dineson, Nancy Sullivan & the Bros. Zimmerman. "Matt, You Fucker," "Barns in Iowa," "Fear of Lightning," & "Poor Baby Jesus" all find the tarnished rusty link between Paul Westerberg, Van Morrison & Lee Hazlewood. All are woefully unavailable officially.

3. Red Max - Unreleased full-length & "Voodoo Liquor Hot Rod" 3-song single with "VLHR" b/w "I'm Sick" & "Huffer Boy"
Guitarist/singer Randy Doctor is Peter Fonda as the Motor Saint, Heavenly Blue, in Corman's *Wild Angels* channeling Heartbreakers' era Johnny Thunders. The greatest "True Believer" rock n roll to emerge from Lincoln. Gia & Mark Lee's Pull-Out being a close second. Also, Doctor dukes it out with Cosgrove & Jon Taylor for best onstage guitar stance.

4. Drive-by Honky "Thrift Americana"
Grunge without the monosyllabic journal-entry angst. Singer/songwriter lyricism with jittery, buzzing power chords. And a blazing state of the union address for midwestern guitar rock's legitimacy -- fueled by a farmboy sophisticate's take on Kiss, Dylan, Cobain, Mercy Rule & Firehose. Okay, so Jenkins is no farmboy, but that's just my way of saying it's real, says all it needs to say and not a shred more, and is not in the least dodgy.

5. Mannequin Beach - S/T cassette
Dan, Randy & Heath were an explosive, angry Minutemen-esque monster & I accidentally wandered onto their untimely -- from my perspective -- demise at Gilman Street in Berkeley.

6. Crush the Clown -- "Alright, So We're All Going to Hell" & "The Minister's Son"
Pop/psych so celestial & radiant, with such dark undercurrents that no one even questioned their Halloween costumes in 1999 -- Jarek the angel, Nick the Devil.

From Charles Lieurance: The Dahlias started in 1996 with Terry, Pat Noecker, Mark Wolberg, Kristen & myself at our house on Peach Street. Mark drummed and played saw. So did Kristen. I played keyboards our first show and Noecker played guitar. It was at Knickerbockers. Then Pat left for New Yawk and we put Silcock on guitar. Did Focht play drums for awhile then? I kinda think so. I played guitar as well on our Suicide cover ("Cheree, Cheree") and on "Calaca City Waltz" and we sat down while we played. We played The Cog Factory in Omaha a lot. That's where Ben joined up. Mark moved to just the saw. Then Silcock quit and Mark moved to guitar. Amoree Lovell joined up to play accordion when we practiced in the mine shaft under Knickerbockers. We just moved Mark around to wherever.

From Tery Daly: Some of my fondest show memories are from Black Dahlias shows. For those who weren't there, seeing the Dahlias do their song "Hound Dog Rain" was an experience. One thing you noticed that looked slightly out of place on stage, was a beat up looking old garbage can that was mic'ed. Throughout the show, Kristen Bailey used to circulate the bar and pick up people's empty beer bottles. It got to the point where fans knew to just bring them up and put them onstage. When they'd get to Hound Dog Rain, Kristen would put on her Safety Goggles and drag the garbage can out on the stage a bit. As they played the song, Kristen kept time by smashing beer bottles in the garbage can to the beat. It was a sight to behold, but unfortunately, most club owners didn't like the flying glass that accompanied the song and the fun had to stop, but while it lasted, it was cool as hell.

One of the Dahlias last shows in Lincoln before they took off for Chicago, took place at a private party in the basement of Homers when it was on the corner of 14th & O st. It was an illicit party, as we didn't have permission to be there, we just knew someone who worked there and had the key. My band Starboy played, as did The W.T., Crush The Clown, and maybe some other bands, my memory of that night is a bit foggy, as anyone who saw me there could tell you. Ben Armstrong says it's the first and only time he saw me drunker than he was. Anyway, The Dahlias were doing a kick ass set when they went into Hound Dog Rain. In my state of extreme inebriation, I thought it would be a great homage to Kristen if I broke my beer bottle on the floor while they played the song. I proceeded to do just that, then a few others joined in on the homage as well. I was in the process of looking for more bottles to smash when luckily people with clearer heads than mine convinced me to stop. Julee Dunekacke has the scars on her legs to prove her attendance at this particular bash.

From Thomas Irvin - John Taylor ending a Mercy Rule show by getting on his knees, taking off his guitar, slamming the guitar body (in time with the music) against the old wooden stage, and then after the fourth measure of the ending, pulling out the guitar cord which of course sent his amp into shrieks. This whole operation was well-rehearsed but that didn't make it any less cool.

The John & Heidi anniversary shows--there were a bunch of these, and one year Bernie McGinn and Dave Rabe and I blew up a big picture of J&H from their wedding, mounted it to foam core, and cut it out, just like the "standees" that you see of Schwartzenegger in movie theatre lobbies. J&H loved it and it stood on stage with them during the show. The only time they ever played as a five-piece.

In fact, wasting company time at the (now defunct) downtown Sir Speedy helping Dave Rabe scan flyers was always a great time.

The first Jukebox was a 45rpm record jukebox, and it featured some good stuff right next to Rod Stewart and New Kids on the Block. So of course I always played the Rod Stewart and New Kids songs. Drove Reg crazy. He'd run to the jukebox and turn it off and then get on the intercom and say, "Okay, who played the Rod Stewart?" I don't know if he ever knew it was me. Sorry, Reg.

The Millions release party for their first album was incredible. That was before the fire department cracked down on capacities, and I've never seen Duffy's more packed. The band was great, and when Reg brought out the free champagne for everyone, you could tell he was super proud to have them hold it at Duffy's, where they had pretty much started (and where Marty had worked as a bartender, for that matter). That night there was a feeling like anything was possible.

Playing the Joey Ramone tribute show with Bernie, Rich, and Paul from Sideshow was wonderful. Walking around before we went on I kept hearing people talking about how they were really looking forward to seeing those guys play together again, since it had been years. I wasn't about to tell Bernie, Rich, and Paul that, though, because they were pretty nervous about remembering the songs (Ramones songs are surprisingly tricky), and I didn't think they needed any extra pressure of hearing how everyone wanted to see them play together again. But they rocked, as I knew they would. Made it easy for me to enjoy the moment of wearing my leather jacket and singing Ramones songs to a packed house. What more could a punk rock kid want?

From "Till The Cows Come Home" by Bart Becker - One of the most durable and notorious Lincoln groups of the 70's was The Boys, a band with a heavy Anglo stance. The Boys hooked up with David Hibler, a UNL English professor. With Hibler as manager, the band sprun upon the Lincoln scene in a bizarre publicity scheme that hit the front pages of at least one local paper.

In February 1975, a series of enigmatic "Invasion Notices" were passed out in downtown Lincoln by closemouthed men. Signed by "Heinrich", the notices were also marked with a stylized symbol that many people took to resemble a swastika. "Those who are wise will be watchful and vigilant for the time of their deliverance," said the second notice. "Those with eyes will see. Those with ears will hear. The rest, fortunately, will ignore this."

The newspapers , the police and the mayor's office didn't ignore it. It made them uptight.

By the third morning, the perpatrators were clearly having a field day. A man in a black trench coat delivered a notice to the clerk of the U.S. District Court. "Give this to the proper authorities", he said as he clicked his heels together and saluted.

"You have no doubt begun to hear the lies and vilifications which the reactionary press and media have begun to trump up against us", said the third notice. "DO NOT LET SUCH DEMENTED REACTIONS SHAKE YOUR FAITH." In fact, by the third day, the notices began getting mostly tounge-in-cheek coverage by most media, total disregard by the rest.

On the fouth day, Hibler denited he had anything to do with the notices.

On the fifth day, Hibler admitted he was Heinrich, and the whole thing was a promotion for The Boys. Lincoln Mayor Sam Schwartzkopf asked if the city could draft a law prohibiting such gimmics that might scare the public and cost the city money and time checking them out. The city attorney reminded the mayor that citizens have the right of free speech.

During the time The Boys were together, they briefly changed their name to Londen, The Yanks, and Cocky Monroe before changing back to The Boys.

THE BRICKYARD

The Brickyard was a venue in Lincoln near the Devaney Center by 16th & Holdredge St that hosted many local and touring punk bands, such as Power Of The Spoken Word, Speedwobble, Baby Hotline, Peer Puppet, NOFX, Social Distortion, and others. It wasn't a regular venue, it was a space available for parties that was rented on a show by show basis, usually by Al Wilson or Bill Jones of Baby Hotline, or members of Power Of The Spoken Word.

From Bernie McGinn: The first show there was July 7, 1983 with JFA, Baby Hot-Line, Antibellum (?) corrupted service) It was my 13th birthday, and they put Bernie's Big Birthday Bash on the flyer. I was stoked! At the last show there, sometime fall 1985 (i think), Peer Puppet was supposed to play, but the cops came and shut the show down and arrested people (including me) for Failure to Disburse. CAPITOL PUNISHMENT

Capitol Punishment was a zine put out by Bill Jones, who was in D.K.ed Willies, Pogrom, and Baby Hotline and his brother Jim, who was in Pogrom and Ex-Machina. Their zine documented the Lincoln music scene of the early 1980s. At first it was just the print zine with band info, photos, lyrics, drawings etc, but they began including along with the zine, a casette of Lincoln bands. Their tapes gave exposure to bands like The Click, Rapid Vapid, Hymn To Joy, Twisted Justice, Pogrom, Cartoon Pupils, Holiday, and many other bands of the day. Many of the bands that had songs on a Capitol Punishment comp were recorded by Bill or Matthew Sweet

From Michael Farrar: The proper name for the group was: 2000 Years of Catholic Guilt. Julian came up with the name. Julian was simply called 'Julian Vermaas' at the time - the 'Winston-Terrence' part wasn't in use at the time. Other than the basement of the house where Bill was living, we didn't play any gigs - anyplace. Although we didn't play anyplace (I wouldn't count the party's at Bill's place since they tended to spontaneous erupt while we were there to practice) I did design several posters advertising the band (just catchy/semi-offensive graphics and the band name - no other details) that Julian and I plastered all over the downtown area for a couple of weeks. This is probably the only reason a band that never played anyplace managed an entry to a list of Lincoln bands. Fynbu and Farrar had previously been working together in yet another band that didn't play anyplace outside of the drummer's basement. Depending upon which one of the members you asked it had a different name - but considering that we didn't ever play anyplace it really didn't matter what we were called. Fynbu and Farrar left to form Fish Box and then later Morphine Angel.

From Nick Westra: We were a mountain dew band with sing-songy tunes in the spirit of Camper van Beethoven, although we were trying to be like Nirvana. hits included "Hold My Penis" and "Pantyhose". Live performances were limited to famous garage shows, freedom rock festivals, and the purple moon cafe. Our self produced/self titled CASSETTE was released in like 1995. yeah, 1995. We were 16. Our 15 minutes of fame was when we played freedom rock with Plastik Trumpet and Cherry Crush. It was at this show when Jonathan Hischke misquoted our band name as Christmas Potato Funk. Jonathan Hischke was a god to us. Still is, for that matter.

From the Nebraska Hall of Fame: The Coachmen, one of the most popular and successful rock bands in the Midwest, reunited with original members, Rick Bell, Jeff Travis, Craig Perkins, "Red" Freeman and Bruce Watson, at the August 23, 1997 show at the Pla-Mor Ballroom in Lincoln.

Originally from Lincoln, the Coachmen were formed in 1964 and performed regionally at teen dances like 9-high, Keen Time, and Woods Park Pool Parties. In January 1965, The Coachmen won the KOIL radio Battle of the Bands in Omaha. Shortly thereafter they recorded and released "Mr. Moon", written by Freeman, first on the local MMC record label, later on Bear Records out of Minneapolis. The song was a smash hit...reaching #1 on the local charts in the fall of 1965, as well as going to #1 in regional markets like San Francisco and Sacremento California, Salem Oregon, and Minneapolis.

From Charles Lieurance: the Dismember was a Hastings band I started with a friend of mine, Jim Story. We ran Rabbit Records (a punk/indie store) together. We ran it...into the fucking ground. We were sort of a cross between X, Flipper and Gang of Four (we covered "He'd Send in the Army". It was me on guitar & vocals, Jim on bass, guitar and vocals, his girlfriend (who worked at Dirt Cheap when we moved the band to Lincoln), whose name I can't remember on keyboards & vocals, and this really cool guy who drove a white Cadillac convertible on drums. Can't for the life of me remember his name either, although I'm pretty sure his last name was Howard. For awhile Doug Marx (great artist and old flame of Diane Cornelius and Sara Kovanda) joined us and we mostly got drunk and got into real physical violence with frat boys at Hastings College. We played some hardcore fests in the midwest with bands like The Sacred Cows (which became Island of Misfit Toys, sorta). Our only Lincoln show was at Larry Boehmer's (Zoo Bar's founder) short-lived rock venue, Larry's Showcase. We're on a compilation of Nebraska hardcore bands somewhere, doing a song called "Let's Put Ronnie on a Coin" and someone told me that we were on a California hardcore comp (this Howard guy moved to LA and started a few hardcore bands, one of which was on the great Live from the Eastern Front record, and he gave a live tape of us to some art damaged hardcore bands in Cali), doing a song called "I Shit Gold."

We were around on & off (Story was a very serious Sociology major and finally moved away to teach in VERY dangerous inner city schools) from 1982-84. Story was hospitalized after a beating he received from some frat boys at one of our basement shows. He was a big fucker too, for a Sociology student that is. The creeps broke two of my ribs the same night but I just laid around and moaned in my apartment in Hastings until they sort of healed. My girlfriend at the time, Lisa Norwood, kept insisting on sucking my dick because we were so cool getting beat up by frat boys for our punk ideals & even though it caused my ribs immeasurable pain, I let her do it repeatedly. After that, I got into as many fights as possible just to keep those blow jobs coming (as it were...)
