That One Guy - 11/21/04
Mike Silverman, a.k.a. That One Guy, and his "Magic Pipe", a plumbing fixture made musical instrument, is perhaps THE most unique artist touring the country today! Mike lays down a unique blend of drone, funk, drum-n-bass, and other styles. His use of other self-made instruments including the Magic Pipe, electric saw and electric boot, (yes, an electric cowboy boot!) makes his frequent comparisons to other artists such as Primus, and Frank Zappa come as no surprise.
That One Guy has recently been signed to Ani Defranco's Righteous Babe records, and has been featured on CBS, NBC, FOX, Univision, and CNN, so he's well on his way to becoming a worldwide phenomenon, but don't take Starcityscene.com's word for it, read what others have had to say:
“That 1 guys tunes are ‘eargasms’ lingering sublimely in your subconscious long after the show ends.”
“All we as an audience could do was sit rapt, mouths gaping, and witness this amazing spectacle”
Sylvia W. Chan
SF Bay Guardian
Like a one-man band plucked from the pages of Dr. Seuss, That 1 Guy delivers earthshaking future funk from ”the magic pipe” to accompany his madcap lyrics about turbo snails, meat storms, and weasel pot pies."
J.G.
Bass Player Magazine
“Necessity is the mother of invention. But in the case of Mike Silverman’s slamming, futuristic funk act, That 1 Guy, the normal rules of biology just don’t apply.”
Andrew Gilbert

An Evening With Mike Watt
That's right, Mike Freakin' Watt. Sunday, September 26th @ Knickerbockers, 901 O St Lincoln, (402) 476-6865. Ages 18+, 8 pm doors, 9 pm show. $10 advance / $12 day of show - tickets available 7/29/04 at Knickerbockers and all
Ticketmaster outlets.
From the Richmond Times-Dispatch:
The man looks more lumberjack that indie-rock icon, but don't let the broad smile, sometime wooly beard and trademark flannel fool you. Mike Watt is the real thing. In 1980 he formed the Minutemen, a trio of punk-rock pioneers who, along with SST labelmates Black Flag and Husker Du, defined the music of an era. After the death of fellow Minuteman D. Boon, Watt formed fIREHOSE and cemented his reputation as a vastly talented journeyman bassist. On his own, he toured constantly without the benefit of commercial success, and artists such as Pearl Jam, Nirvana, and The Beastie Boys lined up to appear on his debut solo album. Playing with his new band, The Secondmen, he's been crossing the country in his own van, and using more than 20 years punk history to help "lay the low flow." - Pete Humes
Hallam Benefit
Starcityscene.com is teaming up with The University Program Council, UNL SIPS, Pepsi, Backtrack Records, and The Red Cross to present a Hallam Benefit to raise funds for the victims of the Hallam storms.
The tornadoes which hit Hallam were an F4 super cell, with winds reaching 210 m.p.h. There was only ONE home left standing in the entire town. All other buildings, including their school, were leveled.
The local music community in Lincoln is donating it's time and talents to organize and perform a free show. The Red Cross will have booths set up to accept monetary donations.
The event will take place Saturday, June 19th at the UNL Union Plaza on the city campus. The show will run from 2:00 pm until 9:30(ish) and feature 11 great local acts.

POWERLESS
Star City Scene & Duffy's Tavern host a bi-monthly (that's
every other month, not twice a month) live music series
called "Powerless" Powerless presents Lincoln rock bands
in an acoustic setting. Many times, the open mics and other
acoustic nights around town are more like "amateur nights"
where anyone can wander in off the streets with their guitar,
so you get a weird mixture of good acts and not so good acts
(frequently more of the latter). This series presents local
rock, alternative, and indie bands reworking their regular
"rock" sets for our acoustic forum.
POWERLESS IV - The Good, The Bad, & The Ugly - 4/21/04 - Duffy's Tavern
Episode 4 of our acoustic music series will feature kick ass sets from 3 very different bands, but whom all fit comfortably within the punk genre:
- Good With Guns
- The Bad Sects
- The Zyklon Bees
FIRST ANNIVERSARY BLOWOUT!
Starcityscene.com celebrates it's first anniversary on April 1st, and we've got several special events taking place as part of the celebration.
- Lincoln Rock Show Poster/Flyer Exhibit
During the month of April 2004 for our first anniversary, we displayed over 300 Lincoln rock show posters and flyers covering Lincoln shows going back over 20 years.
- Encyclopedia of Lincoln Bands
You've probably heard the old timers talking about all the cool bands that used to be around in Lincoln, but that was before you were around so you never saw 'em. Starcityscene.com has done exhaustive research to attempt to gather information on EVERY original rock band that's ever existed in Lincoln. O.K., perhaps we don't have every single one, but we've currently got info on over 300 of them, and we hope to get them all eventually. During the process of talking and e-mailing with folks to gathering the info, I also got peoples recollections about the scene of their day, so step into the way-back machine and enjoy the Encyclopedia of Lincoln Rock.
- Star City Scene Radio Ver 2.0
Star City Scene radio hasn't been around for a full year yet, but we've upgraded the server so we can stream between 15 & 20 hours of music. Lincoln Rocks, and you can listen!
- Star City Scene Anniversary Blowout P-A-R-T-Y !!!
Not all our events are online, after all, the site is about the local music scene! Join us at Duffy's on Sunday April 4th to celebrate and support the local music scene, celebrate Starcityscene.com's first year, and kick the 2nd year off in styleee! We'll be having 3 great bands; The Bad Sects, Rent Money Big, and Tangelo.
